Huracán Otto en Costa Rica

               Bueno gente, bello noviembre por lo general nos trae el final de la temporada  lluviosa en la maravillosa Costa Rica. Comenzó de esa manera, simplemente hermoso, unas pocas lluvias aquí y allá y luego ... oh vaya ... lo que llamamos "vientos de diciembre". Estos son los vientos que son un poco fríos y nos ayudan a sentir que la Navidad está llegando.

               Sin embargo, los últimos días han sido un poco diferentes. Noviembre también trajo noticias de un huracán, el huracán Otto. Huracán Otto es su nombre y nos ha traído  incertidumbre  así como la renovación de la esperanza. Fue primero un huracán, luego una tormenta tropical, y ahora un huracán otra vez. El huracán Otto llegará a  Costa Rica entre las 7 am y el mediodía del 24 de noviembre de 2016. Sera la primera vez en la historia que un huracán golpea nuestro país.

               Las noticias también han aportado datos positivos, ya que el gobierno ha hecho un gran esfuerzo organizativo y la solidaridad de los ticos ya empezó a mostrarse. La Cruz Roja está recolectando productos no perecederos para las personas que están en los refugios. El Ministerio de Educación Pública canceló las clases tanto el jueves como el viernes. Los empleados públicos -excepto los que trabajan en Seguridad y Emergencia- no van a trabajar el jueves y el viernes. Cerca de 4000 personas han sido evacuadas a refugios. La mayoría de las personas también se están preparando para afrontar este huracán comprando suministros adicionales de agua embotellada, baterías, conservas, etc.

               La fe es también un componente importante de la idiosincrasia costarricense, y esto no es una excepción. Oramos para que el huracán Otto tenga un impacto menor de lo esperado tanto en Costa Rica como en Nicaragua. Ya pasó por Panamá y algunas islas del Caribe. Hasta ahora han habido 4 muertos en Panamá.

               En este momento el presidente del país Luis Guillermo Solís ha ampliado la lista de los cantones en alerta roja y el cantón donde vivo es parte de esa lista. Les mantendré informados sobre este terrible evento y por favor únanse a nosotros en nuestras oraciones para que Otto no perjudique gravemente a Costa Rica y Nicaragua.

Hurricane Otto in Costa Rica

Well folks, beautiful November usually brings the end of the rainy season in wonderful  Costa Rica.  It started that way,  just beautiful, a few rains here and there and then…oh my…what we call “December winds.”   These are the winds that are a little cold and help us feel that Christmas is coming.

            However, the past few days have been a little bit different.  November also brought news of a hurricane, Hurricane Otto.  HurricaneOtto it is, and it has brought uncertainty as well as the renewal of hope.  It was first a hurricane, then a tropical storm, and now a hurricane again.  Hurricane Otto will hit inland Costa Rica between 7 am and noontime on November 24^th, 2016.  It would be the first time in history that a hurricane hits our country.

            The news have brought positive data too since the government has done a great organizational endeavour and the ticos’ solidarity already started showing.  The Red Cross is collecting non-perishables for the people that are in the shelters.  The Ministry of Public Education cancelled classes both on Thursday and Friday. Public employees –except the ones that work in Safety and Emergency – are not going to work on Thursday and Friday.   About 4000 people have been evacuated to shelters.   Most people are also  getting ready to face this hurricane by buying extra supplies of bottled water, batteries, canned goods, etc.

            Faith is also an important component of Costa Rican idiosincracy, and this is no exception.  We pray that Hurricane Otto will have a lesser impact than expected both in Costa Rica and our neighbor Nicaragua.  It already passed by Panama and some Caribbean islands.  So far there have been 4 dead in Panama.

            Right now the president of the country Luis Guillermo Solís has expanded the list of red alert cantons and the canton where I live is part of that list.  I will keep you posted on this dreadful event and please join us in our prayers so that Otto does not harm Costa Rica and Nicaragua that badly.
