Costa Rica, Pérez Zeledón
Costa Rica es una tierra de diversidad y belleza. Muchos
han oído hablar sobre el majestuoso Cerro Chirripó, el pico más alto de Costa
Rica. Sin embargo, su principal ciudad, Pérez Zeledón, a veces pasa
desapercibido. Pérez Zeledón, según Wikipedia, "... es el cantón 19 de la
provincia de San José, en Costa Rica, ubicada en la región Brunca"
(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A9rez_Zeled%C3% B3n_ (cantón) Añade que su capital es San Isidro, y tiene
una población de 134,534 habitantes. Entre los muchos lugares pintorescos de
Costa Rica que he visitado, Pérez Zeledón (o San Isidro del General) es uno de
mis favoritos por varias razones.
En primer lugar, Pérez Zeledón (PZ) es fácilmente accesible. Normalmente
tomar el autobús para llegar allí siempre ha sido una experiencia muy agradable.
Hay dos líneas de autobús que dan servicio a esta región: Tracopa y Musoc. Tracopa es más fácil de contactar. Mi
experiencia ha sido muy positiva cada vez que los llamo para obtener
información sobre los horarios de autobuses. También tienen una página web muy fácil de usar y contiene mucha información

Musoc, por otro lado, es muy difícil de contactar. Nunca he tenido suerte al llamar para averiguar sobre su
horario y tarifas de los autobuses. No tienen página web, aunque otros sitios publican sus

Terminal en San Jose
Cualquiera de las dos líneas de autobús tardan entre 3 - 4 horas
para llegar a PZ, y el paisaje es impresionante. Hortensias,
así como muchos otros tipos de flores y exuberantes bosques verdes florecen a
lo largo del camino. Las
vistas son debido a la altitud de la
carretera por encima de los valles. Por
lo general me sorprende ver algunas torres de energía eólica a lo largo del camino,
así como experimentar un descenso de la temperatura donde hay niebla densa en
el camino y, por lo tanto, hay que ponerse un suéter y masticar chicle. La
entrada al Parque Nacional de Quetzales es fácil de ver si se sienta en el lado
derecho.
El
autobús hace una parada para “orinar” de
15 a 20 minutos en donde el uso del baño
es gratis. También
hay un restaurante donde se puede comprar comida típica.
Al
llegar a PZ, por lo general le echo un vistazo a los horarios de autobuses
pegados en la pared cerca de la
ventanilla de venta de tiquetes. Es
recomendable comprar el billete de vuelta con tiempo o se pueden sufrir retrasos.
PZ centro está
a unas 10 cuadras de la terminal de autobuses. Al
igual que en cualquier otra ciudad del mundo, use el sentido común y la
precaución. La
terminal de Tracopa, por cierto, está detrás de la iglesia católica de PZ.
La segunda razón por la que me gusta PZ es la tranquilidad que emanan su parque
central e iglesia. La
iglesia católica es un majestuoso edificio con hermosas vitrales. En
homenaje a su patrón "San Isidro
Labrador", la iglesia exhibe una escultura y una pintura. Por
otra parte, este es el año del Jubileo de la Misericordia designado por el Papa Francisco, y PZ no escapa de este
hecho. Su
iglesia tiene una "Puerta de la Misericordia", donde los católicos
pueden hacer una peregrinación y recibir la misericordia de Dios.

donde se indica que esta iglesia es una
catedral construida en 1954.

se puede ver nítidas fotos antiguas de la iglesia original construida en 1936.
La tercera razón es su parque central, inaugurado en 2006. Es un lugar tranquilo donde los jóvenes y las personas mayores se reúnen para hablar, estudiar, o simplemente pasar un buen rato. Es muy limpio y sus áreas verdes están bien conservadas. Hay una gran estatua en honor a las personas agricultoras, así como la escultura de una madre amamantando a su hijo.
La cuarta razón es la calidad de su alojamiento y
restaurantes. Si

veremos una gran variedad de opciones. Normalmente
me alojo en "Hotel Chirripó", que está justo en frente de la
escultura de los agricultores del parque central. Sus 42
habitaciones son pintorescas, aunque cómodas y limpias Cuarenta de las
habitaciones tienen ventiladores mientras que sólo 2 tienen A / C. No
tienen “wake up call”, pero se puede coordinar con la recepcionista y el guarda
puede llamar a su puerta a la hora deseada. También
hay un número razonable de campos en su parqueo. Una
cosa es cierta, el personal de recepción es muy amable y servicial. La
recepción funciona las 24 horas del día y son bilingües Inglés-Español. Este
hotel fue fundado en 1971 por Hilda Ramírez y Jorge Cruz. El
hotel también tiene su restaurante, abierto desde las 6 am hasta las 10:00 pm,
aunque reciben órdenes hasta las 9:45 pm.
El servicio a la habitación está disponible.
Ah, y por último, la quinta razón por
la que me gusta ir a PZ es porque es posible toparse con Keylor Navas, el super

Costa Rica is a land of diversity and beauty. Many have heard about the majestic Mt.
Chirripó, Costa Rica´s highest peak.
However, its main town, Pérez Zeledón, is sometimes unbeknownst to
people. Pérez Zeledón, according to
Wikipedia, “…is the 19th canton of the province of San José in Costa
Rica, located in the Brunca
region https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A9rez_Zeled%C3%B3n_(canton) It adds that its
capital city is San Isidro, and it has a population of 134,534 inhabitants. Among the many picturesque sites in Costa Rica that I
have visited, Pérez Zeledón (or San Isidro del General) is one of my favorite
for various reasons.
Firstly, Pérez Zeledón (PZ) is easily accesible. I usually take
the bus to get there, and it has always been a very pleasant experience. There are two bus lines that provide service
to this region, Tracopa and Musoc.
Tracopa is easier to reach. My
experience has been very positive every time I call them to find out about bus
schedules. They also have a very easy to
use website with all sorts of info http://www.tracopacr.com/
Musoc, on the other hand, is very
difficult to reach. I´ve never had any

Nevertheless, in my last trips to this
area I´ve chosen Musoc because of its bus terminal accesibility. Like Tracopa, it´s located in what many
people would consider a red light district just downtown San Jose. However, I take a bus by the Central Park in
San José (Loma Linda-Carit, ¢230 [$0.40 USD]), and about 15 minutes later I get
off at the Women´s Hospital (aka Carit Maternity), cross the crosswalk, and I
find the Musoc bus terminal on the corner.
If you want to use the washroom, there is a fee to be paid at its
entrance. Other choices for
transportation are to take a taxi to the desired bus terminal or drive. Waze is very popular in Costa Rica, but
usual precautions need to be taken regarding this app.
Either bus line takes between 3 to 4
hours to get to PZ, and the scenery is breathtaking. Hydrangeas as well as many other types of flowers and
lush green forests blossom along the way. The breathtaking views are due to the
road’s high altitude above the valleys. I
usually amaze at a few wind turbines along the way, as well as experience a
temperature drop where there is dense fog on the way and, thus, a need to wear
a sweater and chew some gum. The
entrance to the Quetzales National Park is easy to spot if sitting on the right
side seats.
The
bus also makes a 15 to 20 minute pee stop in
where restroom use is free. There
is also a restaurant where typical food and snacks can be purchased.

Once I arrive to my destination, I usually
take a look at the bus schedule posted on the wall near the ticket wicket for
my return trip. It is advisable to buy
the return ticket ahead of time or you may encounter delays.
Downtown
PZ is about 10 blocks from the bus terminal.
As in any other city around the world, use common sense and
precaution. Tracopa bus terminal, by the
way, is just right downtown behind the Catholic church in PZ.
The second reason I like PZ is the peacefulness that
emanates from its central park and church. The Catholic church is a
majestic building with beautiful stained glass windows. In
homage to the patron saint “San Isidro Labrador”, the church exhibits a
sculpture and a painting. Furthermore,
this is the year of the Jubilee of Mercy that Pope Francis designated, and PZ
is no stranger to this fact. Its church
has a “Door of Mercy” where Catholics can make a pilgrimage and receive God’s
mercy.

original church built in 1936.
The third reason is its central park, inaugurated in 2006. It is a quiet haven where youngsters and
older people get together to talk, study, or simply have a good time. It is very clean and its green areas are well
kept. There is a big statue honoring
female and male farmers as well as the
sculpture of a mother breastfeeding her child.
The fourth reason is the quality of its lodging and
restaurants. If you look at Trip Advisor https://www.tripadvisor.com.mx/Hotels-g315767-San_Isidro_de_El_General_Province_of_San_Jose-Hotels.html , you will see a wide variety of choices. I usually stay at “Hotel Chirripo”, which is
right in front of the central park’s farmers sculpture. Its 42 rooms are quaint though comfortable
and clean. Here is where you would
really say that you get the bang for your buck.
Forty of the rooms have fans while only 2 have A/C. They do not have wake up call, but you can
coordinate with the front desk clerk and the guard can knock on your door at
your desired time. There is also a reasonable number of parking spots in their
parking lot. One thing for sure, the
front desk personnel is super polite and accommodating. The front desk runs 24 hours a day and they
are bilingual English-Spanish. This hotel was founded in 1971 by Hilda and
Jorge Ramirez Cruz. The hotel also owns
its restaurant, which opens from 6 am till 10 pm though they take orders until
9:45 pm. Room service is available.
Oh, and last but not
least, the fifth reason I like going to PZ is because you might bump into the one and only
Keylor Navas, the super famous Spanish Real Madrid soccer team goalie who is originally from this
